Rendezvous 2004 To Be Held in Reno By Ed Kirby The 2004 NOLA Rendezvous will be held at the Atlantis Resort & Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada, from Wednesday, July 21, through Saturday, July 24. Board and committee meetings are scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, July 20, and throughout the day on Wednesday. The NOLA-negotiated room charges at the Atlantis will be $69 per night. Vendors and exhibitors will be setting up tables on Wednesday morning, and registration will begin at noon. Wednesday evening, the annual reception and cocktail party will take place. Following the opening ceremonies at Thursday morning’s general session, a series of presentations will be made by experts in Western history. As in the past, Friday will be reserved for the field trip. The tour this year will take participants west from Reno through the historic Donner Pass region, then to sites of lawman and outlaw activities in the beautiful Sierra Mountains. On Saturday morning additional presentations will be made, with the afternoon left open for those who wish to shop, discuss the history of the West with fellow enthusiasts and researchers, or to just relax. The annual NOLA banquet will be held on Saturday evening, followed by awards, the auction, and announcement of the successful bidders at the four-day silent auction. In addition to the full day Friday field trip, there will be a bus trip to historic Virginia City, Nevada. In addition to its history, Virginia City is a fun place to visit. At this writing, tentative topics for presentation at the Rendezvous include accounts about Pat Garrett, Wyatt Earp, Bill Miner—The Gray Fox, Henry Plummer, The Johnson County War, the Wild Bunch, early history of NOLA, and others. Information concerning speakers and topics will appear in the next issue of the NOLA Newsletter. For many years the basic registration for the NOLA Rendezvous has held steadily at $85. Meanwhile, for example, the cost of coffee breaks has doubled, and other Rendezvous costs have tripled, quadrupled, or increased even more. In addition to annual dues, the Rendezvous dollars serve as the major income source for the association, allowing NOLA to publish the Quarterly and the Newsletter, books, and to finance grants, and support other important projects. For these reasons, at the NOLA Board of Directors meeting in July 2003, the basic registration fee was increased for 2004 by $10 to $95. Despite the increase, the $69 hotel room charge at the Atlantis will enable Rendezvous participants to attend at costs even more reasonable than in the recent past. For those who prefer not to rent cars, the 2004 Reno Rendezvous provides an excellent location. Reno’s International Airport serves most major airlines. Van service from the airport to the Atlantis Resort & Casino Hotel is provided without charge. AMTRAK provides rail transportation to the center of Reno and bus services are also available. Once again Lenore Conway is serving as the chair of Rendezvous 2004. Ed Kirby is serving as program chair.
